Eighteenth and nineteenth-century European imperialism in South America was largely perpetrated and validated through science, in no small part by the appropriation of plant species through classification; botanical taxonomical illustration was a primary tool for that process.
This project consists in translating some of the most representative images of the Spanish Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada conducted by Jose Celestino Mutis between 1783 and 1808. For this, I divide the colors into hundreds of flat samples and copy the drawings’ outline on a grid, changing the original axis.
