Raízes2019
Raízes is a memorial site for the victims of the October 2017 forest fires near Tondela in the north of Portugal. Brazilian architect Paulo Viel and I designed the structure based on encompassing notions about renewal and scars. The concentric circles take after trees’ annual growth rings; the shape goes 1 meter into the ground and hosts a Sobreiro tree, a native species to the region.
One of the critical factors to the proliferation of fires in Portugal, and the increase of their impact, is the widespread presence of Eucalyptus trees that have replaced native species. We wanted to build a place for remembrance and contemplation, but also a place to reflect on the current state of Portuguese forests and the urgency to replenish them with native trees that keep them in balance.
Raízes was awarded first place in a national contest and is due for construction during 2023.
Raízes es un memorial para las víctimas de los incendios forestales de octubre de 2017 cerca de Tondela, en el norte de Portugal. El arquitecto brasileño Paulo Viel y yo diseñamos la estructura basándonos en nociones integrales sobre renovación y cicatrices. Los círculos concéntricos asemejan los anillos de crecimiento anual de los árboles; la forma se adentra 1 metro en el suelo y alberga un árbol nativo de la zona llamado Sobreiro.
Uno de los factores críticos para la proliferación de incendios en Portugal, y el aumento de su impacto, es la presencia generalizada de árboles de eucalipto que han reemplazado a las especies nativas. Queríamos construir un lugar para el recuerdo y la contemplación, pero también un lugar para reflexionar sobre el estado actual de los bosques portugueses y la urgencia de restablecer su equilibrio a través de la plantación de árboles nativos.
Raízes obtuvo el primer lugar en un concurso nacional y su construcción está prevista para 2023.
